Prologis and Performance Team, in partnership with Maersk, have unveiled Southern California’s largest heavy-duty electric vehicle charging depot, a major milestone in the state’s transition to clean transportation. The depot, located near the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, is powered by the nation’s largest EV truck microgrid and is capable of charging up to 96 EV trucks simultaneously.
The Denker Avenue charging depot, strategically positioned off the Harbor Freeway in Los Angeles, is a testament to the commitment of companies like Prologis and Maersk to support California’s goal of phasing out diesel trucks and increasing the use of electric vehicles in the transportation sector. With the state’s requirements to move to electric drayage trucks by 2035 and electric heavy-duty trucks by 2045, initiatives like the Denker charging depot are crucial in building the necessary infrastructure.
To overcome energy supply challenges and accelerate the deployment of EV trucks, Prologis developed a cutting-edge charging solution in collaboration with Mainspring Energy. The microgrid at the Denker charging depot utilizes 2.75 MW of fuel-flexible linear generators and 18 MWh of batteries to provide up to 9 MW of charging capacity, offering a sustainable and efficient power source for the EV trucks.
Public-private partnerships have played a significant role in the success of projects like the Denker charging depot. Government agencies, regulators, and private industry collaborators have worked together to expedite the delivery of infrastructure needed to support the transition to clean transportation. The collaboration between Prologis, Performance Team, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the City of Los Angeles, and Southern California Gas Co. has paved the way for the development of the charging depot.
With 20,000 trucks serving the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, continued collaboration and innovation will be essential in achieving California’s emission reduction targets. The Denker charging depot is part of a larger effort by Prologis and Performance Team to advance the adoption of electric trucks in Southern California, with previous projects in Santa Fe Springs and Commerce already providing charging infrastructure for electric fleets.
Performance Team, a Maersk company, operates over 140 electric vehicles across the United States and is committed to sustainable logistics practices.
