Ampere Unveils 256-Core Server Processor to Address Data Center Power Demands

Ampere Computing, a startup chipmaker known for its high-performance processors, has unveiled plans to release a new 256-core server processor called AmpereOne. This new chip is designed to address increasing power demands in data centers while delivering superior performance compared to existing CPUs on the market.

Scheduled for release next year, the AmpereOne chip is expected to offer a 40% performance improvement over the company’s previously released 192-core AmpereOne chip, all while maintaining the same power consumption levels. AmpereOne is a custom Arm-compatible chip that aims to meet the performance needs of various applications, including cloud-native workloads, databases, web servers, media delivery, and artificial intelligence inferencing.

In addition to the AmpereOne chip, Ampere has announced a collaboration with Qualcomm to develop a joint solution that combines Ampere’s Arm-based CPUs with Qualcomm’s AI inferencing chip, the Qualcomm Cloud AI 100 Ultra. The joint solution aims to provide scalable and cost-effective AI inferencing services to cloud service providers and enterprises.

Ampere’s Chief Product Officer, Jeff Wittich, highlighted the growing power consumption in data centers, driven largely by the adoption of AI technologies. The company’s efficient solutions aim to meet the demands of both large-scale AI models and smaller AI workloads running on CPUs.
